The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) and the National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF) began working together as one organization in May 2017. The merged entity is committed to using its combined knowledge and resources to focus and energize the patient safety agenda in order to build systems of safety across the continuum of care.
The IHI/NPSF Lucian Leape Institute (LLI) works as a think tank to define strategic paths and calls to action for the patient safety field, providing vision, context, and impetus for system-level change. Following the merger, LLI continues its work as a program within IHI.

Transforming Health Care:
A Compendium of Reports from the IHI/NPSF Lucian Leape Institute
Since 2010, the IHI/NPSF Lucian Leape Institute has enlisted the knowledge of leaders and experts to study five areas that the members identified as being the keys to transforming the safety of our healthcare system:
- 1. Transparency
- 2. Patient/consumer engagement
- 3. Restoration of joy and meaning in work and workforce safety
- 4. Care integration
- 5. Medical education reform
This compendium brings together the executive summaries, recommendations and action checklists from the five reports to promote discussion, set work priorities, and guide what may sometimes be difficult decisions.
