Engaging With Numbers

The Impact of Numeracy on Patient Engagement

This is the third post in my series on how to engage patients through written materials. In February, I wrote about three pillars to creating health-literate material: purpose, audience, and input. In March, I offered two tips for writing engaging content: use question-style headings and explain technical terms you cannot avoid using. Of course, there are […]

‘Immigrants’ Bring Patient Engagement Energy

An Irish software expert who’d been helping companies sell on eBay walks into a room with a Slovenian inventor who’d built a world-class company in the “accelerator beam diagnostics market.” (Don’t ask.) What they share is not just foreign birth, but “immigration” to health care from other fields. Both have come to the MedCity Invest conference […]

Patient Engagement

PCORI—the Patient Controlled Outcomes Research Institute)—is one such program that includes patients as equal […]

Patient and Family Engagement

Engaging With a Complex Healthcare System

Editor’s Note: The complexity of the American healthcare system is difficult for patients, families and consumers to understand. It also frustrates clinicians and increases the risk that something will go wrong in the course of care. For those in need of care or simply trying to manage routine needs, such as ongoing medications, the system […]

The Business of Healthcare

Engagement as a Strategy—Not a Buzzword—for Business Success

I’ve been paying attention recently to the word “strategy,” often used in writing about the business of healthcare. Health systems and other organizations find themselves in an increasingly competitive business environment. Rising healthcare costs, value-based care, and high-deductible health plans lead patients and payers to look carefully at cost and value as they make decisions. […]
